I use ultra brite clear LED's. I run any LED at 20mA, usually, the max being 30mA. This should make them last longer, in fact my sim has been running now for 5 years and all the LED's still working.
Looking back, I do think at 20mA they are still too bright! When the cockpit is dark, the annunciators can be too bright. I would suggest buying an led tester from amazon with different mA pins. Test the LED in the dark and during daylight to find the best current/brightness that works for you. Once you know the current/mA you can work out the resistor required.
