This first version does not have a clutch as you quite rightly pointed out. It uses a stepper motor to drive the units. The stepper drivers are powered to a current that will just about move the levers. This means when you need to manually move them, the stepper just stalls and does no damage. However, disconnecting the AT is always preferred. The stepper drivers are also only powered when the sim needs to move the throttles.
Gerhards Mod for the Pro version coming later also includes clutches for smoother operation.
